William A. Spaulding was born in Maine in 1842 and settled with his family in Monticello, Minnesota in 1856. He served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865. Following the war he worked in railroad surveying and construction and went on to study dentistry. In 1875 he graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery. Schuyler Flint was born at Brookline, Vermont, on June 16, 1814. He married Ann Benson Mosher on November 29, 1843, at Morristown, Vermont. Ann was born November 10, 1818, at Sharon, Vermont. The couple had two children: Susan Ann (b.ca.1844) and Francis S. (1846-1908). The Flints came to Minnesota in 1856 and farmed in Langola Township, Benton County.
